Fall in Love with Your Journey: 2 Days. 70 Miles. On a Bike.

Oh, California. How I love thee. From the mountains, to the beaches, to hiking trails. There's no end to the natural beauty that this state has to offer. After having the amazing opportunity to live in the beautiful ski town of Mammoth Lakes for three years, my boyfriend and I moved to the Bay Area a little over a year ago. The hills are breathtaking, the city life is stimulating and we are able to do bike trips to beautiful places such as Half Moon Bay.

Half Moon Bay. I think. Or just some random pic I had of a body of water.

Half Moon Bay. I think. Or just some random pic I had of a body of water.

Half Moon Bay is a coastal city in San Mateo county and super cute with breathtaking views of the ocean and magnificent cliffs. We planned this trip a few of weeks ago and decided it would be fun to take BART (a subway system in the East Bay and San Francisco area) to the end and then bike 20 miles to our hotel.

Twenty miles. Given that I literally could only bike 3 miles in one shot this time last year, this was a huge feat for me. I was prepared for a little bit of a hill midway through and then smooth sailing to the coast after that. We left around 9:30a and planned on checking into the hotel around 2:00p.

All smiles before the 5 mile death climb

All smiles before the 5 mile death climb

Right. After a 45 mile trek, a 5 mile DEATH climb, numb fingers and fighting the urge to physically hurt my boyfriend, we arrived in the quaint town around 5:30pm. Yes, eight loooooong hours later. Why? Because instead of taking our original path, we were persuaded by this biking "guru" guy to take this other route that would only add "30 minutes or so" to our trip. Clearly an emphasis on the "or so".

But, as I was climbing the never-ending 5 mile hill and descending down a chilly shady path where my fingers and toes literally went numb, I took a moment to soak in what was around me. Mostly because my lungs needed a freakin break, but also because the views were spectacular. And the chirping birds were music to my ears. And the rustling leaves were a soothing reminder that sometimes its not always the destination that matters. Its the path that you take to get there that helps you realize what's most important. I realized how strong my body was, how beautiful nature really is and how much I love and appreciate the talent that my man possesses and how safe and secure I feel around him.

As sappy as all that is, it also made me realize that while its great to have goals, its equally important to treasure every step and lesson learned along the way. There was a point during the uphill climb in the blistering sun when I wished for a downhill trek in the shade. And I got it. And you know what, it was equally as tough. Although I was sweating bullets during the climb, the downhill portion was so cold and a crazy treacherous. But, on the flipside, it was a welcomed change to the environment I was in before. All in all, every point of the ride, albeit challenging, offered a gift that was meant to be treasured. While it lasted.

You know the first thing we wanted were some delish cocktails!

You know the first thing we wanted were some delish cocktails!

I also grew a deeper appreciation for biking in general. As someone who just got into biking a year ago, up until this point I honestly did not understand why people spent thousands of dollars on a bike. And my boyfriend works for a bike company! During this trip, I was fortunate to ride a Specialized bike, The Ruby, which retails for about $3,000. Crazy, right?! Until you realize how important it is to have a light, fast, rotational mass thingy thing (or whatever you nerdy engineers call it) on a trip like the one we took.

After having a great meal, a couple of cocktails and spending the night in a gorgeous hotel with a much needed hot tub, we took a shorter path home. Which had its own pros and cons. Mostly the cons consisted of semi trucks whizzing past us at 80 miles per hour, BUT it was half the distance. And after doing 45 miles the day before, I could appreciate this short yet dangerous route.

70 miles. 2 days. On a Bike. Lesson Learned: Its not always the destination that matters. Its the Journey getting there.

Fall in Love with Your Journey.

Bike Models in Cosmo? Yes. Please and Thank YOU.

"You don't get legs like this pushing a gas pedal!"

"You don't get legs like this pushing a gas pedal!"

Well well well. Yet another ad posted by an online retailer causes a stir amongst feminists and skinny girl haters. This ad went viral at the beginning of the month and elicited a slew of hateful comments.

"Or riding a bike."

"Your art director needs to go back to Cosmo"

“If you WANT a woman with legs like that you must never want to ride bikes with women. Real cyclists have real muscles. Not toy Barbie legs.”

“Cigarettes and cocaine”

Yikes! I hope the model didn't read these comments from these so-called female supporters.

Instead of critiquing the ad and whether or not it was effective, I wanted to take a closer at the bike industry and its fashion, or rather the lack thereof.

Momentum Mag, an independent media company that promotes the road biking culture, released an article encouraging the cycling industry to recognize the needs of female riders including female-centric fashion. According to The American Bicyclist Study: On the Road to 2020, 60% of bicycle owners between 18-27 are women. The key demographic for Cosmo? 18-34. More and more of the cycling population is using their bike as a mode of basic transportation. Not to bomb a sketch trail or race for glory.

Women, and men, are starting to ride bikes just for the heck of it. And forgive the females who may identify with the demonized ad. Instead of bouncing into a bike shop for cute clothes for their new fixie only to be greeted with boxy, totally not flattering, masculine clothing how about we give this newly discovered consumer something that fits her needs. Hoover's reports that half of all clothing retail sales is for women between 18-34. On average, a woman spends $1,069/year on clothing. And yet, bike shops only seem to offer bibs or shorts that go down to the knees with padding that does nothing for the female booty. And forget it if you want anything brightly colored or with polka dots.

Some are going to say, particularly those hard core female cyclists, that the biking industry is not for the fashionista girly girl who wants to look cute. It takes away from the true meaning of cycling and perpetuates the stereotype of the ditzy chick who can't hold her own.  However, if you are able to move pass those feelings you'll see a huge void in the market and a new business opportunity on the horizon.

There is at least one company that is moving in on this niche group. Iva Jean is a line of clothing for women who ride bikes. Their line is clean, sophisticated and absolutely perfect for the professional woman who doesn't believe you have to give up fashion for functionality. They launched a Kickstarter campaign in November 2012 for $15,000 and raised $26,500 for their Spring 2013 line. Iva Jean was featured in this month's Marie Claire and continues to grace headlines with their innovative line.

As the market continues to change, be prepared to see the industry respond to the need of fashionista riders. Bike retail locations will include designs and layouts for pencil skirts and flouncy, summer dresses. At least they should, if they wish to stay relevant. Relevant to a woman who uses her bike to go to work, the local market or meet up with girlfriends for a little bubbly. Women who aren't hard core cyclists. Women who--gasp-- read Cosmopolitan.

Mommy and Me- New Fitness Trend?

Despite lackluster economic conditions, the fitness industry continues to see a healthy growth in revenues. Revenues from 2010 increased by 5% and the number of health club memberships has grown an average of 2.5% over the last few years. Approximately 41 million Americans are members of health clubs and the industry generates just under $10 BILLION annually. How do they continue to encourage people to join their centers and renew their memberships even during economic hardship?

Like any other industry, they must be aware of social trends and respond to their consumers needs. Over most recent years, they have been responding to the obesity epidemic by making their facilities less intimidating for those looking to get back into shape. You may have noticed a few of these subtle changes at your gym- an increased number of personal trainers, more group exercises classes, bootcamp style sessions and nutritionists on staff.  With approximately one-third of our nation classified as clinically obese, fitness centers have begun to spend their resources developing programs centered around fun, positive and supportive programs to help individuals ease back into shape.  Popular programs such as Zumba®, a Latin based dance cardio class, report a weekly participation of over 14 million people in 150 countries.

Fitness centers have taken note on how popular, and financially successful, group ex classes have been and are continually searching for more innovative programs to offer to their participants. One of these programs are "Mommy and Me" classes.

While reports vary greatly, it appears that more and more moms are opting to stay at home and start small home businesses to help supplement the household income. Moms with availability during the work day coupled with the desire to lose that baby weight, are the perfect target group for fitness centers.

And centers are catching on. Offering yoga, dance and other fitness classes for mama and baby. Stroller Strides®, founded by mompreneur Lisa Druxman in 2001, is a fitness class that is centered around the use of a stroller for cardio and toning exercises. In just over a decade, the franchise has grown to over 1300 locations.

licia Langlais-Himelstein came up with the idea of Sling Babes® about a year after she had her first child. Sling Babes® is dance fitness for mommies by mommies, incorporating 15 minutes of core focused floor work with 30 minutes of cardio dance to help postpartum moms dance their way back into shape... all with their baby by their side. Alicia said she the epiphany to start this program "while taking a Haitian dance class while carrying my son throughout the class. I felt comfortable doing this because carrying babies in folkloric dance classes is common place. I found myself wishing I could bring him with me to dance fitness classes and BING, the bulb went off!!!"

"Mommy and me" classes allow the bonding between child and mother to continue and it also gives moms the opportunity to connect with other women within their community. nd with the increasing rate of childhood obesity, its a great way to expose children to the beauty of fitness at a very early age.  As fitness centers continue to look for ways to serve the needs of their consumers and the increasing success of programs like Sling Babes® and Stroller Strides®  be on the lookout for the spread of "Mommy and Me" offerings throughout the nation.

10 Steps to Become a Personal Trainer

Author: Paige Whener

Source: About.com

If you're a fitness enthusiast who wants to annoy others with your passion for health, maybe you should consider becoming a personal fitness trainer. The following steps will give you an idea of how it all works.

1. Decide if You Have What It Takes-Personal trainers need to have a multitude of skills. You should be analytical, patient, nurturing, persistent, organized, an effective motivator and, most importantly, a good listener. You should love working with different kinds of people and be a self-motivator. You don't have to look like a body builder to be a fitness trainer, but you should definitely lead a healthy lifestyle to be a good role model for your clients.

2. Choose a Certification - There are a variety of certifying organizations, each offering different classes, workshops and exams for getting certified. You'll want to choose an organization that is nationally recognized and accredited. If you already have a club in mind, call and ask them what certifications they require. If you don't know where you'll work, take some time to research the websites of major organizations to find out: How much the certification costs, what the pre-requisites are, if they offer a workshop/exam in your area or a home study program. More about certification organizations.

3. Choose a specialty - This isn't required, but in this competitive market, many fitness trainers are boosting their resumes by getting specialty certifications. Getting a specialty certification means you have more to offer and, even better, you can usually charge a little more for your services. One example is ACE's Clinical Exercise Specialist certification which takes you beyond basic personal training and allows you to work with special populations like people with chronic diseases or injuries.

4. Get a Job at a Club - Using your local phone book, call some clubs in your area and ask them if they employ personal trainers. If they say yes, ask about availability of jobs and the procedure for filling out an application. You can also visit some of the major clubs on the Internet and see what jobs they have open. Check out the Gym Locator to find clubs near you.

5. Setting Up Your Own Business - Briefly, setting up your home business requires: Choosing a business entity (i.e., sole proprietorship, partnership, etc.), choosing a business name, registering your company, getting liability insurance, setting up your gym (if you're training from your own home), targeting potential clients, and marketing yourself. For more info, seeGuide to Become a Personal Fitness Trainer.

6. Market Yourself - Once you get things going, it's time to get your name out to the masses. This means making flyers, newsletters, business cards, a website or even setting up neighborhood seminars to bring in the business. It helps to have some equipment at your disposal to make this easier; having a computer, a color printer and basic publishing software. Be prepared to hawk your wares anywhere you can: posting flyers in sporting goods stores, getting friends and family members to spread the word and sending out flyers and newsletters to people you know. Offering free consultations and seminars is a great way to get people in the door.

7. Improve Your Skills and Education - Continuing education. It's a dirty job, but if you want to keep your certification and be good fitness trainer, you'll have to do it. Thankfully, there are some companies out there who's sole job is to offer you continuing education courses. Desert Southwest Fitness offers a variety of courses, or you can get your CEU's from your own certifying organization.

8. Become Indispensable to Your Clients - Being successful at this job takes work, talent, skill and experience. Getting a certification is no guarantee that you'll either get clients or, more importantly, be able to keep those clients. To improve upon your skills, consider joining a national organization, such as IDEA, and attending personal trainer summits, workshops and seminars.

9. Other Options - You don't have to work in a gym or even work for yourself. Personal fitness trainers work in all kinds of different areas: corporate fitness, cruises, resorts, spas, online training and more. Check out The Wellness Connection or Resortjobs.com for some ideas on what else you can do with your certification.

10. Beyond Personal Training - Once you're an established fitness trainer, there are even more opportunities available to you. You can consider consulting, fitness writing, athletic coaching (with the proper education), group fitness instruction or even opening your own gym. Whatever you choose, you'll find that being a personal trainer provides everything you love in a job.
