A time full of festive parties, delectable chocolate treats, tasty cocktails, holiday cheer and hopefully time spent with loved ones.

I know its a busy time and those cute knit sweaters you're wearing are hiding some areas ;) But, don't neglect your body. DON'T DO IT. Hit the gym, go to a dance class, take some yoga.

Tuesday- Dance Dance Dance! Check out a local Zumba class or hip hop class. Hmm, where should I go? I'll let you know ;)

Wednesday- Merry Christmas!! Take today to rest and enjoy time with loved ones...and delicious clean cocktails. Hehe. 

Thursday- Lets ease into today's workout with an easy 10-15 minute stretching routine in the morning. Click HERE for the video. Then, take a yoga class! I think I'll check out my friends at Flying Yoga in the Temescal district of Oakland!

Friday- 5K run around Lake Merritt. Is it frightful outside? Go to your local gym and do your 5K on the treadmill or elliptical. Personally, I prefer the elliptical ;)

Burn off the Thanksgiving Feast!

Heyyy Fabs! How was your Thanksgiving? If you were like me, you ate a TON on Thursday...and every day since then. ;)

 The holidays are a time when it's easy to let our fitness slide. So, lets kick off the month of December on a running foot and commit to staying FIT all year round! *MUAH*

Monday- No need to ease into the workouts this week. Lets kick it into high gear immediately! Do a 5K run at a steady to fast pace.  If the weather is frightful in your neck of the woods, hit the treadmill or elliptical. No excuses, you can do it. And don't forget to stretch afterwards!

Tuesday- Circuit training! Start with a 15 minute warm up then hit the weights. If you have a gym, alternate between cardio, strength and core exercises for 30 minutes (one minute on each machine). If you don't have access to a gym, check out this video! Click HERE

 

Wednesday- Happy Hump Day! We've been doing some major work. Keep it UP! But lets scale back a tad and stretch out your bodies. Take a bikram or core based yoga class. If you don't have a studio that you can attend, check out this quickie yoga workout with Tara Stiles!

 

 

Thursday- Time to hit the bike! Since I live in Cali, I'm going to go on a 10 mile ride outside. If you have to deal with silly things like weather, hit up a 1 hour spin class in your neighborhood!

Hiking is a Great Workout!

Happy Monday! I hope you had a fabulously relaxing and productive weekend.

 Monday- I'm in Arizona visiting my family! :) Starting off the week with some light stretching and a short morning hike in beautiful Tempe, home of Arizona State University.

Tuesday- Rest Day. I'll be traveling most of the day, so I'm taking the day off. Feel free to switch around your rest days.

Wednesday-  After a week of eating out and being slightly off schedule, I'm ready to hit my workout HARD today. 3 mile run and an ab blaster circuit below (do 3x).

20 crunches

40 Russian Twists

30 Mountain Climbers

10 Burpees

1 minute planks (one minute on each side, then one minute with feet together)

Repeat 3x with 1 minute rest in between.

Thursday- After that rough workout yesterday, let's take a day to stretch our muscles and do some yoga.

Clean Drinking: How to Drink Healthy at the Bar

I'm a hardcore fitness aficionado. I have been for as long as I can remember starting at the age of six when I started borrowing my mom's Jane Fonda workout videos. I'm not even lying. I would get all dressed up in my leotards and do 50 leg raises, determined to never have a saggy booty. Yes, at six. More on that later.

But I also loooove my girly cocktails. It's a tad bit of a dilemma since a lot of people ask me for workout advice and then see my Facebook posts of delicious margaritas. Or just the fact that I know cocktails don't exactly adhere to the whole notion of "abs are made in the kitchen." 

But, I've finally found a way to make cocktails healthy. Well, that's what I tell myself. Like food, I prefer to make them at home rather than going out. Not only is it easier on the wallet, but I also know exactly what ingredients are going into my drink. 

But, there are times when I like to head to my neighborhood bar for a happy hour rendezvous or I'm out at a mixer and want to order a couple of libations. So, I came up with a self guide to ensure that my drinks are full of nutrition and I don't wake up with a nasty hangover. Yup.

Below are my 5 tips on how to drink cleanly at the bar. You're welcome.

  1. Always ask if they use house made ingredients in their cocktails. If yes, go for it! 
  2. NEVER drink premixed sweet n sour. If it's not housemade, ask to substitute it for a mix of simple syrup (hopefully this is housemade) and juice. I usually ask for grapefruit (fresh, please!). On that note, if the bar doesn't make it's own simple syrup best believe I won't be back. 
  3. Substitute coke or sprite with ginger ale or better yet, GINGER BEER. We all know that soft drinks have bad stuff in it (lots of sugar and high fructose corn syrup). Ginger ale still has some of that but the ginger somewhat counteracts that. Again, hopefully it's housemade.
  4. Any drink with tonic is the "cleanest" drink. Gin and tonic, vodka and tonic are some examples. If tonic is too boring for you, ask for a splash with club soda. Just a splash!
  5. If a drink has a fruit mix added to it, be very cautious. I'll only order the drink if it is fresh, housemade puree. Otherwise it's bound to have crazy amounts of sugar, high fructose corn syrup and citric acid.

Workout Schedule September 9-15

Happy Monday! OMG, I can't wait to tell you about this new exciting challenge I'm starting. Annnnddd I'll be throwing events all along the way so you can be a part of the journey, and hopefully, it inspires you to challenge yourself.

But, in the meantime...here is my workout schedule this week!

 Monday- I'm really enjoying easing into my Monday, so lets do some light stretching and this killer ab workout with Blogilates! Click HERE! Bonus, I'm subbing class today at Hipline! Join me at 8:15p-WOOO HOOO!

TuesdayJoin me for dance class at Hipline in Oakland. NEW time of 8:30a! Don't live in Oakland? Find a dance class in your area to get your groove (and fitness!) on! Can't make it at 8:30a, I'll be subbing the 7:15p class too. Ohhhh yea.

Wednesday-  Let's do a quickie 5K this morning. Oakland loves, I'll be running around Lake Merritt. If you do a run today, be sure to let me know about it on instagram! @missdanetha.

Thursday- I'm taking today OFF because tomorrow will be killa!

Friday- Doing yoga in the morning. THEN, I'll be announcing my new challenge. Get excited!

 Monday- Happy Labor Day! I'm taking it easy today! Light stretching in the morning and Blogilates' abs on fire video! Click HERE

Tuesday- Lets run off those Labor Day goodies! 5K run (3.1 miles). LETS GO!

Wednesday-  Its supposed to be gorgeous out today. 10 mile bike ride. Ohhhh yea.

Thursday- Switching it up a little this week and doing a 1 hour hot yoga class. My sore muscles need it :<

Friday- I've been craving a HOT Hip Hop class and I know a fabulous spot in Oakland. Checking out a dance class?! Tag me and let me know about it! @MissDanetha

Thursday- Usually today is my day off. But, since I took it easy on Monday lets go for a 4 mile run. YAY!

I wouldn't say I'm a "beets" person. To be perfectly honest, their whole look kinda freaks me out. But, I kept hearing how amazing they were from all these nutritionists so I decided to do a little research. And come to find out, they are incredible! I have yet to try whipping them up in the kitchen, but after I became a spokesmodel for Suja Juice I've started drinking their Purify drink to get some beets in my life. Wanna know why you should eat more beets? Read below!

A Smoothie A Day Keeps the Doctor Away

If you follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram you know that I love smoothies more than anything!

Well, maybe not more than margaritas. But it's really really close.

I've been fortunate to always have relatively good health, but without fail I usually catch some sort of cold 3-4 times/ year. And one of those bouts usually knocks me out for a 2-3 days. 

But (knock on wood) since I started drinking smoothies at the beginning of 2013, I have not been sick ALL YEAR. That's almost a full 7 months of no coughing, sneezing, wheezing, runny noses, or anything!  Amazing.

I've also bumped up my workout regimen and started doing more yoga to keep my stress levels down. But, I truly believe smoothies are keeping my immunity defenses on full protection mode. Thank GOD. Because ain't nobody got time for expensive a** health care.

Below are the ingredients that I always incorporate in my morning smoothies. I've written a post about the benefits of Chia Seeds (click HERE to read it) and each week I'll post the benefits about a different ingredient.

  • Chia Seeds, read about their benefits, HERE, or Flax
  • Kale or Spinach
  • Fresh or Frozen Fruit
  • Banana
  • Organic Juice
  • Kefir
  • That's it! And it only takes 3-5 minutes out of my morning. So NO EXCUSES!
